This position manages a caseload of convicted felons on community supervision, develops working relationships with community placements and resources, and conducts special investigations to promote the reform and redirection of persons under community supervision while ensuring the safety of society.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful applicant will be required to pass a polygraph examination, background investigation, and UA before final appointment;
  • With or without reasonable accommodation, the selected applicant must successfully complete the six-month training period and show proficiency in the following areas:
    • Safety Training (firearms, OC exposure, Defensive Tactics, Taser exposure (optional));
    • Case Management;
    • Evidence base practices.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Knowledge of:
  • English grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • principles, methods, and procedures to facilitate an acceptable reintegration and/or continued adjustment of persons under community supervision;
  • the attitude, problems, and behavior of offenders under community supervision;
  • human behavior and interpersonal relationships;
  • basic terminology and concepts of corrections and community supervision;
  • legal terminology and procedures;
  • chemical agents, restraints, and basic firearm safety and firearm techniques;
  • individual counseling techniques.
Skill to:
  • train and mentor other staff.
Ability to:
  • be responsive to calls after normal work hours;
  • complete residential checks after normal work hours;
  • complete transports, to include out-of-state transports that may require an overnight stay;
  • represent DOC and the Parole Division when collaborating with community partners and law enforcement entities;
  • document logically, accurately, and concisely pertinent information and decisions;
  • communicate information clearly and accurately;
  • plan, organize, schedule, direct, and evaluate the work of others;
  • interact with persons under community supervision and others to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with them;
  • exercise the physical and mental capability to protect oneself and assigned firearm;
  • maintain composure under stressful conditions;
  • assist with development, planning, and implementation of training programs;
  • develop training curriculum, train other parole staff, and make assessments/recommendations of any noted deficiencies;
  • maintain impartiality in dealing with persons under community supervision.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
